Where We Ate for 5 Days in Roma, Mexico City

As a fussy eater on a 6-month backpacking trip, sometimes food can be tricky for me. But in the neighbourhood of Roma, there is no shortage of cafes and restaurants.

Just a little note, being as fussy about food as I am, this is by no means a foodies guide to Mexico City, just simply a review of the places we stopped by, most of which were chosen completely randomly.

So if continuing reading you will find our opinions on the food we ate and more importantly the coffee and cocktails I drank.

day one

Cafe Toscano(breakfast)- I believe there are a few different locations of this cafe throughout Mexico City. We went to the one near the Plaza Luis Cabrera, a lovely location. The coffee here really stood out to me it was the best cup I had in all of Mexico City! We also ate some delicious fresh pastries. Overall for a simple breakfast, it was tasty and worth it for the coffee alone.

El Traspatio(dinner)- Josh opted for the wings here and I went for the steak tacos. I have to say my meal was deliciously simple with some flour tortillas with steak and cheese and fries on the side. The wings however came out with nuts on top, which was a fail for Josh with an allergy to nuts. The staff here went above and beyond in this situation, giving Josh a new meal, a shot of mescal and an anti-allergy tablet all free of charge, so highly rate the service. The cocktail menu was a 10/10, I had the Mescal Mojito which I loved. Delicious food and drinks, gorgeous courtyard setting and great staff.

day two

Peltre(breakfast)- we stumbled into this place one morning for some breakfast as it was just down the road from our hostel. The first thing I would say about this place is the menu is extensive, with both Mexican and international breakfast options. Josh went for a basic ham and egg sandwich and the best thing about it was the funny egg hole they made in it. For me this was not the place for good coffee, it tasted watery and the cup size was way too large, points for the size of their croissants though. Overall this wasn't my favourite cafe spot as there were options in better locations with better coffee.

La Rotisserie(lunch/dinner)- We stopped here twice, once for a quick taco at lunchtime and we enjoyed it so much we wanted to come back for dinner, as a fussy eater this menu was perfect as it was so simple. Unfortunately, when we came back it was just not the same fresh food we had previously had, we watched them microwave it all. I opted for the chicken tacos and rice and Josh went for the 1/2 chicken with a few sides. After being microwaved no surprise the chicken was super dry and the meal wasn't great. Cheap and cheerful lunch stop just make sure you get there early for the fresh stuff.

day three

Abarrotes Delirio(breakfast)- A super cute farm-style shop, bakery and cafe all in one. Make sure to check out the cakes and pastries here they are to die for. With a super cute outdoor seating area, we relaxed and enjoyed a light breakfast of pastries and sandwiches. The coffee was an 8 out of 10, the service was lovely and all the food came out looking super fresh. Highly recommend.

day four

Soul La Roma (dinner)- A classic American-style restaurant in Mexico, I know I know I should be opting for Mexican but honestly, I just wanted a burger. I opted for the chicken burger and Josh went for the bacon and cheese hotdog, both came with fries. We enjoyed our meal but it was nothing special (don't know what we expected duh...) it was the simple food I was after. If you are just looking for classic American-style food and don't mind a hefty price tag then this place could be for you.

day five

Cafe Janerio (breakfast)- I loved the setting of this cafe, just off the Plaza Rio de Janerio it was lovely to watch everyone stroll through the park, especially when they had dogs. Not a super extensive breakfast menu but staple options and the coffee was super good here. Josh opted for the scrambled eggs and they came out looking and tasting great. Overall if you can grab yourselves a table outside and watch the world go by you are in for a winner.

El Diez(dinner)- This place describes itself as Argentina cuisine, but the menu is full of burgers, pasta dishes, salads and some Mexican options too. One of the highlights of this place was the mango mezcal cocktail I had, it was delicious, with fresh mango juice and a kick from the spicy rim and smoky mescal, you have to try this. I have nothing but good things to say about the food, portion sizes were large but the prices were steep.
